Introduction
In September 2010, The Celtic Manor Resort in Newport will host The 2010 Ryder Cup.
The Celtic Manor Resort is one of Europe's leading golf and business resorts, with three top class courses, a £10 million clubhouse and floodlit golf academy. It's a fitting home for what is now regarded as the world's third largest sporting event and will be a focus for millions of enthusiasts from more than 100 countries around the world.
A hub of growth and regeneration, Newport is fast becoming a nerve centre for business, leisure and investment. Being the host city for The 2010 Ryder Cup is a source of huge excitement and an opportunity that Newport is already embracing.
The Ryder Cup itself is a golf match contested biennially between USA and Europe and was first staged in 1927. In 2006 the Cup was played at the K Club in Ireland and in 2008 it will be taken to Valhalla Golf Club, Louisville, Kentucky.
Each team has 12 players that represent the very best from Europe and America. They are led by non-playing Team Captains - in 2006 the European Captain was Ian Woosnam. The match format has changed many times, but since 1979 it has comprised of four fourball and four foursomes during days one and two, with twelve singles matches on the final, third day.
This may be a global sporting event and a contest between the very best, but it is all about prestige rather than prize money, played out in beautiful surroundings in front of a global audience.
