Central Area – Introduction

The Newport 2020: Unlimited Vision Central Area Master Plan maps out a new future for Newport, establishing a vision for urban renewal that will act as a catalyst for a continuous cycle of social and economic improvement.

The Plan, commissioned by Newport Unlimited on behalf of the people of the city, calls for significant enhancements over the next 15 to 20 years, creating a more sustainable city where people want to live, work, learn, play, eat and shop.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the city to develop a higher quality of life for its residents.

The overall vision of the Master Plan Newport 2020: Unlimited Vision is to create employment and bring activity and expenditure into the City Centre, generating a new culture and character for Newport. Increased residential, employment and retail activity will underpin future development and prosperity, creating a vibrant and self-sustaining city.

Improving the quality of the environment and maximising the potential of the river as an economic and recreational resource will be essential to delivering change over the next 20 years. The Master Plan for Central Newport provides a broad, yet aggressive vision for the city to the year 2020, requiring investment from both public and private sectors.
